India
Competition law and policy in India have witnessed significant growth and development over the years since the establishment of the Competition Commission of India (CCI). The CCI has been pivotal in addressing antitrust issues, regulating mergers and acquisitions, and ensuring fair market practices across a diverse range of industries.
This evolution reflects India’s commitment to fostering a competitive market environment, aligning with its position as a major global economic player and the world’s fifth-largest economy. As India’s commercial sector continues to expand rapidly with digitalization, the importance of robust competition law has become increasingly evident, not only to protect consumer interests but also to enhance market efficiency and drive innovation.
Focusing on India’s competition framework is strategically important for the GW Competition and Innovation Lab. By engaging with India’s unique and evolving competition landscape, the Lab will play a critical role in shaping regulatory policies that foster an equitable business environment. This involvement also provides a platform to advocate for innovation, ensuring that Indian markets remain vibrant and competitive on a global scale.
Furthermore, the Lab’s involvement in India offers a chance to tackle and manage the complexities and challenges associated with the country’s fast-paced economic growth and diversification, including regulatory obstacles and the necessity for more robust policies on digital competition, artificial intelligence, and other emerging areas. Through research, policy advocacy, and collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Indian government, private sector, and academic institutions, the Lab will contribute to the development of a fair, transparent, and innovation-driven market economy in India.
